CD
Born to be a 'Primas'...
Published in:
2003
Description:
Portrait of a musician. An unconventional traditional music recording! These recordings introduce Gézá Potta and his music, a rural Gypsy violinist (prímás) from a village in abaúj a region of South Eastern Slovakia. He is the kind of musician that could have been found once in their hundreds in the Carpathian Basin. These musicians spent their whole lives serving and entertaining their village audiences. At the time when the musicians and their music were in high demand they were esteemed members of the community. But as this demand diminished their knowledge was not passed down and there are now only a few of them left. From amongst those left, one of the most accomplished and versatile musicians, can be heard on this album.

Magyar tánciskola (Hungarian Dance School)

CD
Hungarian Dance School Front
Published in:
2006
Description:
In the 70's when the new Dance House revival was promoting traditional dance off the stage, there was a feeling that, as put by Sándor Csoóri, “When it came off stage, many people thought that this important part of our traditional culture was finally going to lose its soul.” But it didn't exactly get lost. It is the fact that people are uninformed, not the Dance House revival that is holding it back. It is rather, the instruction, which from before Kodály and Bartók's time to this day is trying to be kept secret, it is this, that we could be proud of. If you ask a cultivated adult Hungarian today, which region the dance they have just seen comes from, we would be pleasantly surprised if they could distinguish between the different dances and songs of the Carpathian Basin with any certainty. This CD covers the traditional music and dance from different regions of the Carpathian Basin, published to accompany the show Hungarian Dance School.

Figur Band - Magyar népzene Szlovákiából (Hungarian traditional music from Slovakia)

Description:
Our traditional music here in the Felvidék (Southern Slovakia) region, is some of the richest in the Carpathian Basin. Attention was first brought to the area's old and precious vocal traditions by Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály's collections. We take as our basis everything from the tunes of csallóköz and zoborvidék, the ballads and shepherds songs of Gömör to the Slovak folk songs collected by Bartók. News of the bagpipe players from Ipolyság came from a land far away, but it was through the legend of the Gypsy musicians that we found our inspiration. The string bands were our example, as a start we could mention our respect for János Bihai and János Lavotta, or the dozens of string bands from the Gömör region around over the last 20-30 years....
